This is a fully narrated adventure that starts at the KapohoKine Adventures’ store in downtown Hilo where you can stock up on adventure gear from Patagonia, Keen, and Columbia, or start your adventure on our indoor climbing wall. Boarding your tour vehicle, the lush greenery of Hilo gives way to stark black basalt lava flows in Kalapana, a village destroyed by the advancing lava just a few years ago.

Highlights

Your Park Ranger-trained guide reveals the highlights of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, from active volcanic craters and steam vents to the historic Jaggar Museum. Watch for current volcanic activity as the sun sets before returning to Hilo. Dinner is included. Tour duration is approximately 7 hours from Hilo and 11 from Kona.

Tour Description

Your National Park Service certified guide will pick you up from your hotel, accommodation or meeting location for your evening tour to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The tour varies slightly if you are starting from Kona or from Hilo. In both cases you will visit a black sand beach, make various stops in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, hike over lava fields and see Mauna Ulu, a landscape like no other on earth. For those visitors coming from Hilo, your tour starts a bit later and includes a stop in Kalapana. For visitors starting in Kona or Kohala areas we make stops at a coffee farm for lunch, a bakery for a snack and Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park.

What to Expect

Moderate air temperatures at sea level, occasional rain showers, walks across uneven, rocky terrain including the recent black lava flows, and tour locations created just for KapohoKine Adventures’ guests. There are unique locally produced gifts and products available for purchase at the KapohoKine Adventures Store. Red lava cannot be guaranteed on this tour. Walking distances and viewing opportunities will vary depending on volcanic activity, which changes constantly. Federal, State, or County officials may close or open the lava viewing area at any time depending on conditions and hazards present. Every attempt is made to get as safely as possible to the lava viewing area and tours depart whether the area is currently open or closed as conditions do change constantly.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothes in layers, shorts are fine, light jacket or sweater, sunglasses and hat, comfortable closed-toe shoes are required (sandals and flip-flops or “slippahs” will not be accepted)

Full Day and Early Evening Tour departing from Kona and Hilo. Guests should be able to negotiate stairs and walk for 20 minutes unassisted. Volcanic emissions, including sulfur gas, may affect those with respiratory concerns. Participants should be prepared for immediate evacuation in accordance with directions given by County, State and/or Federal officials

Evening Volcano Explorer Tour Details

Evening Volcano Explorer – from Hilo

For those traveling from Hilo, we can pickup at your hotel or you can meet us at our KapohoKine Adventures’ store where you can get geared up and take on our indoor climbing wall. We take a tour through historic Hilo as we head out to the fishing village of Kalapana which was destroyed by lava. We hike across the lava flow to a newly formed black sand beach. We also stop by the Star of The Sea Painted Church, a historic building saved lava multiple times by the community. The next stop is into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to explore the Visitor Center, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook and Steaming Bluffs. We stop in at the Volcano House for incredible views of the caldera all while being safely guided by our expert tour guides. You’ll then stop to have dinner before heading back to Hilo that evening about 8:30 pm.

Evening Volcano Explorer – from Kona

After pickup in Kona, Waikoloa or Kohala we make the first stop at a world-famous Kona Coffee farm where you’ll enjoy with a delicious deli lunch with incredible views over Kealakekua Bay, upon itʻs shores rests Captain Cook Monument. Sample the incredible 100% Kona grown coffee, grown right there on the farm. From there we head further south making a quick stop at the Painted Church, Punaluʻu Bake Shop and Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach. (Watch out for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles). We next take a break for dinner before heading into Volcanoes National Park for sunset.
