As well as building muscle strength in your upper body and legs, the cross-training effect of surfing is a brilliant workout for your core, making it a full body workout. Officially classed as a ‘vigorous’ exercise by health experts, surfing is a great way to burn calories and burns roughly the same number of calories as football, rock climbing, or a session in the gym. It is also low impact, so much better for your knees and hip joints than exercises like running.

If you’re thinking about learning to surf, Hawaii is the perfect place to start. Our state is known for its surfing culture, but what many people don’t realize is that surfing has a long history. In ancient Polynesia, surfing was a central part of society, and the chief was traditionally the most skilled wave rider in the community. The ruling class had the best beaches and boards, while the commoners were not allowed on the same beaches. Of course these days, anyone can enjoy surfing regardless of social status. All you need is a surfboard and a willingness to catch some waves! So, if you’re looking for a fun way to enjoy the Hawaiian sun and surf, give surfing a try. You might just be hooked for life!
