Kula, located on the slopes of Haleakala, is an area known for its beautiful pastures and lush vegetation. This picturesque town has a unique history that dates back hundreds of years. Kula was once a flourishing farming community with many large ranches and farms dotting the landscape. These days, Kula’s soil remains rich in nutrients thanks to its volcanic origins and cool climate which makes it ideal for growing Lavender, Protea, and Macadamia Nut crops among many others. The area continues to be popular for visitors who are looking to escape the heat of other parts of the island while taking in stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Makawao is a small town steeped in history and culture. After cattle were introduced to Maui it was discovered that they thrived in the climate and wide open spaces that Upcountry is known for. Since then, Makawao has been home to generations of native Hawaiians and paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys). The town still retains its old-world charm with many storefronts opting to keep the outdoor hitching rails where locals used to tie up their horses. In addition to its historical significance, Makawao is known for its vibrant art scene featuring galleries showcasing works from local artists. With such deep cultural roots, it’s no wonder that Makawao is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hawaii.
Watching the sunset atop Haleakala is an unforgettable experience. The mountain rises 10,023 feet above sea level and offers spectacular views of Maui’s lush landscape, with sweeping vistas of rolling hills and valleys below. As the sun sets in the sky, it casts a golden light over the entire island, creating a mesmerizing display that will stay with you for years to come. On clear days you can spot whales out in the Pacific Ocean or even view neighboring islands such as Molokai and Lanai in the distance. It’s truly a sight not to be missed!
