As we make our way down the summit, your bike ride will begin at the 6,500-foot elevation, where you will start the descent down the world’s largest resting volcano. You will gently descend the 21 switchbacks, where you will enjoy bi-coastal views of Maui’s central valley and the West Maui Mountains, all while taking in the beauty around you.

We’ll explore the Summit Area and Visitor Center, take another look at Kalahaku Overlook, and make a quick stop at the Headquarters Visitor Center while in Haleakalā National Park. You will see rare and beautiful plants and wildlife on this tour, some of which are only seen on the slopes of Haleakalā. This long dormant volcano is home to the rare Silversword plant (known in Hawaiian as ‘ahinahina) and a nesting area for Hawai’i’s state bird, the Nēnē goose.
The most sought after experience on the island of Maui is watching the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā. Our guides bring you up to almost 10,000' in the pre-dawn hours for a spectacular pre-dawn celestial show. The incredible stars on most nights are clear, like the ancient Polynesian voyagers saw them. They used the stars to navigate across vast distances on their sailing canoes. As the sun rises from behind the crater rim, the landscape is transformed into deep changes of color which exposes the bright red cinder cones that dot the valley floor far below.
After exploring the park we’ll head outside the park to the 6,500-foot elevation for a guided or unguided bike ride down the mountain. The guided option keeps the group safely together, helps limit the group speed, and includes an expert guide in the lead as well as a van following behind.
Your tour may provide multiple chances to ride the same part of the downhill portion of the mountain. The second time - you know what is coming and can have a bit more fun, safely!
The bike tour starts high up in the ranch lands and works itʻs way down the many switchbacks. The rolling pasturelands and forested slopes of the upcountry have amazing views during this leisurely ride down the mountain. After doing a couple of runs on this section. We will get back into the van and do a sightseeing tour through the beautiful Kula area and stop in Makawao for shopping and exploring. From there you can continue your ride back to Paia or Haiku, depending on your tour choice.
We end our tour just outside the North Shore town of Paia (or Haiku), after going from 10,000 feet to sea level in just a few short hours during this one-of-a-kind adventure. On your way back to your hotel, briefly see the north shore surfer town of Paia. Choosing to return to Paia allows time for exploring the main streets down to the beach, just like the residents do.
For those who purchase the extended tour or choose the option with transportation, we will return you back to your hotel or condo around noon.

Start your adventure to see the natural and man made wonders of Maui by riding down from the slopes of Haleakalā. A bike is a simple, exciting, and healthy way to see this beautiful island, and with us you can take either an informative guided tour or go on a more self-guided journey.
Your tour will begin with a guide picking you up from your hotel to guide you up to the summit of Haleakalā (unless you choose to check in from Paia or Haiku). In the early pre-dawn hours, your guide will drive you up to see some stars before the sun rises. Once you reach your destination at 10,000 feet your guides will then take you to the rim of the crater where you’ll witness one of the most spectacular sunrises in the world. Peering through crystal clear skies (we canʻt guarantee the weather) you’ll witness the enchanting beauty of Maui as it welcomes a new day. On the way down through the national park, you will learn about the history of Haleakalā, its unique geology, and the rare plants and animals that can only be found in Maui.
As your adventure continues to the bike portion you will descend to the 6,500 ft. level of Haleakalā. From there, you will bike downhill through the upcountry ranch lands. Your guides will give you a comprehensive briefing to ensure your safety. Once the briefing is completed you will begin your bike ride down the switchbacks of Haleakalā- the largest dormant volcano in the world.
After enjoying some bike rides down the mountain, you will rejoin the sightseeing tour, passing through pine and eucalyptus forests, fields of lavender, and through Haleakala ranch to the upcountry community of Kula, home to the gallery of renowned local artist Curtis Wilson Cost. Take in the scenery and witness the bi-coastal views of Maui from high up the mountain as we sightsee your way to Makawao town.
Makawao is a historical paniolo (cowboy) town in upcountry Maui. While there, take in the simplistic beauty of this quaint town and admire the architecture which hasn’t changed much since its inception in the early 1900's. Take a stroll back through time to when life was simpler and moved a little slower. Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants while shopping for gifts at one of the many boutiques and shops found in town. From wood sculptures to glass-blown masterpieces to local and far eastern apparel you’re sure to find something for the whole family.
From here your bike ride will split into two options, you can continue to bike back to the respective towns where you started (Paia or Haiku), or take the sightseeing tour van. To Paia: You will head down through Makawao Town, ride by old pineapple fields, and continue down to the Pacific Ocean into Paia town. To Haiku: Your route has some uphill sections through more rainforest, rural residential, and farming areas.
Guests on the guided tour with hotel pickup will take the sightseeing tour portion at this time.
