Check-in will begin 45 minutes prior to your scheduled departure at the Kona Airport. This tour is the best possible way to end a day on the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. Upon taking off, your pilot will fly directly along the Kona and Kohala Coasts where you will be able to catch glimpses of the secluded beaches tucked below the lava fields. Flying to the far side of the Kohala Mountains will take you through a series of valleys that are almost inaccessible except by air. In these valleys you will be taken aback by the size of the waterfalls cascading down lush cliff walls to the jungle below.
The tour continues over the crest of Mauna Loa, which is the world’s largest volcano, and during certain times of the year there may even be snow up at the peak. The next stop will be the green sand beach known locally as Papakolea, which is one of only four incredibly rare green sand beaches in the world. The last two sights on this tour as the sun begins to set will be Pu‘uhonua ‘o Honaunau which is a protected area under Hawaiian law and Kealakekua Bay where Captain Cook first made landfall back in the 1700’s. Your pilot, who will be narrating the tour via the onboard headsets will move the helicopter into the ideal position to view the last few moments of daylight. Depending on the weather conditions you will be able to enjoy jaw-dropping hues of red, orange, purple and pink painted across the sky. Pay close attention to the horizon line, as you may be able to see the incredibly rare ‘green flash’. Return times to the Kona airport can vary, but are typically 2 hours after departure.
