Although not everyone may be familiar with them, humpback whales are some of the most fascinating creatures in the world. These gentle giants can be found in all oceans, but they migrate to Hawaii every year to mate, calve, and nurse their offspring. So keep your eyes peeled for the newly born calves! A baby humpback whale calf is typically 10 to 15 feet long and weighs nearly 2,000 lbs. A fully grown humpback whale ranges in size from 40 to 50+ feet long and can weigh up to 90,000 lbs.! Whales are not the only majestic creatures that you’ll find in Hawaiian waters – you’ll also have a chance to spot dolphins, sea turtles, and a variety of different fish.

Description

Kauai is one of the best places in the world to see these gentle giants up close, and our experienced guides will ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience. During the prime whale-watching season late November/early December to March, humpback whales make their annual migration to the warm waters around Hawaii. This is an incredible sight to behold, and you may even get to hear their songs from a distance. Dolphin sightings are also common, so keep your eyes peeled for these playful creatures as well.

You will board our Coast Guard-certified 25-foot Rigid Hull Zodiac Boat and we will provide a safety orientation before we depart. These are same style of boats used by Navy Seals and US Coast Guard and are known for speed and maneuverability in the waters. This proves to be extremely useful for our Whale Watching tours as it allows us to reach the locations more effectively and directly than the larger catamarans. We do sit much closer to the water, so there’s a higher chance of experiencing a “REFRESHING” splash or two on this tour. However, this also means that we have a better chance of seeing wildlife up close, including whales and dolphins.

Your guide will be sure to point out some spectacular views as you cruise out to the best viewing areas. Our vessels do not have a cover or top for shade, which is by design for best coastline viewing. Hats, sunscreen and/or sun shirts are recommended.

Restrictions

Adventure, Not Leisure: Be prepared for an adventure; our Zodiac boats offer a dynamic experience, not a leisurely cruise.
Age Limitation: Participants must be at least 5 years old to join the adventure.
Safety First: For safety reasons, pregnant individuals and those with significant health concerns, such as back, neck, hip issues, chronic joint problems, or recent surgeries, are advised not to participate.
Location Note: This tour explores the southern coast of Kauai and does not venture to the Napali Coast.
Activity Focus: The tour is dedicated to whale watching and does not include snorkeling.
Self-Transportation: Guests are responsible for their own transportation to and from the departure location included in the detailed confirmation email.

Cancellation

If you choose to cancel the tour for whatever reason, you will need to make sure to do it OUTSIDE our cancellation period of 72 hours. Tours cancelled less than 72 hours prior to the scheduled date/time of the tour or guests who do not show up to the scheduled tour will be charged 100% of the tour total. (Time is calculated to the minute! If your tour is at 8am, you have until 7:59am Hawaii Time the day before.) However, if you need to reschedule your tour and are within the 72-hour cancellation period, there will be a reschedule fee added to your reservation. Once a reservation has been rescheduled there is not a new 72-hour cancellation period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we touch the animals?

We maintain a respectful distance form humpback whales and do not swim with the spinner dolphins. For your safety and the safety of the animals, you are not allowed to touch the wildlife we encounter. Turtles are vulnerable to drowning when approached aggressively by humans. But more importantly, we don’t want to be the reason they would change their behavior. This better preserves the natural habitats for marine life.
What if the weather is bad?

Our tours usually run rain or shine in moderate weather conditions. However, we may cancel the activity up to just before the tour in the event of severe or unsafe weather conditions. We always maintain the safety and integrity of our tours. However, please allow our experienced team to make the call in the event of weather. Please do not rely on weather forecasting apps. These do not always reflect the conditions where our tours take place. Likewise, what is happening in Princeville or Kapa’a or Lihue is NOT an accurate representation of what is happening in Poipu. Many times, we will have sun and blue skies while it’s unfavorable in the other parts of the island. If we cancel the tour, all reservations will be allowed to reschedule if we have availability during your stay or will receive a refund in full.
What types of marine life will we see?

The island is home to beautiful reefs that provide a home for some 200 or so indigenous Hawaiian marine species. You will have the opportunity to spot wonderful coral reefs, colorful reef fish, sea turtles, dolphins and on occasion monk seals, rays and in seasons humpback whales! Marine life is wild and we will never be able to guarantee what you see, but we can guarantee a good time!
What if I get seasick?

If you are prone to motion sickness it is always a possibility when in moving water. Even more so from the boat. We recommend taking something ahead of time as we are unable to provide any refunds for sea sickness. A few helpful hints to help prevent motion sickness if you are unsure if it will affect you: limit acidic foods such as coffee, pineapple, and citrus fruits and juices prior to your tour.
