Maui Nui Luau At Blackrock Features
Luau Celebration
The luau is a traditional Hawaiian feast that has been around for centuries. It originated as a way to celebrate special occasions such as births, weddings, and other important events. The word “luau” itself comes from the Hawaiian words “Lu” meaning “leaf” and “au” which means “feast”. In ancient times, these feasts were reserved for royalty only but over time they became more accessible to everyone in Hawaii. Today, the luau is still an integral part of Hawaiian culture and is celebrated by both locals and visitors alike!
Hula Dancing
Hula dancing is an ancient Polynesian dance form that has been passed down through generations. It’s a narrative art form, telling stories and legends of the Hawaiian people with graceful hand gestures and swaying hips. Hula dancers use their hands to create beautiful shapes and symbols that represent different characters in the story they are telling. The traditional costumes worn by hula dancers feature colorful skirts or leis made from natural materials such as flowers, grasses, leaves, feathers, shells, bark, and more. Whether it is a solo performance or performed in groups called ‘hālau’, hula dancing can be seen throughout Hawaii today as both an entertaining performance art and a spiritual practice.
Local Foods – Kalua Pork
Kalua pork cooked in an imu is a traditional Hawaiian dish that has been enjoyed for centuries. The word “imu” refers to the underground oven used to slow-cook the meat, which gives it its signature smoky flavor and tender texture. The pork is usually seasoned with sea salt before being wrapped in leaves and placed into the heated imu pit. After several hours of cooking, the pork emerges juicy, succulent, and infused with a deep smoky aroma from its time spent in the earth’s embrace. Kalua pork cooked in an imu is truly a unique experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else – it’s no wonder why this dish remains such a beloved culinary tradition!

The history and culture of Maui is incredibly rich, and through the art of song and dance you will be told stories from the very early days of the island's existence. It’s said that the demigod Maui is responsible for lifting the heavens from the earth, slowing the sun’s path across the sky, and giving the secret of fire to the Hawaiian people. Off in the distance as the sun sets you will also be able to spot cliff divers taking turns jumping off the jagged edges of Black Rock.
In addition to live entertainment, you will also be treated to delicious drinks and a three course meal served tableside. On the menu are some local favorites that pay tribute to the same food the ancient Hawaiian people would enjoy at their feasts and celebrations including but not limited to ahi poke, kalua pig, and poi.
