Experience the heart of Hawaiian culture by immersing yourself in a traditional Luau. These vibrant gatherings are more than just feasts – they are a spectacle of food, music, dance, and communal spirit that encapsulate the essence of ‘Aloha’. At a Luau, you’ll get to savor the unique flavors of Hawaiian cuisine, with dishes like the iconic Kalua pig, slow-cooked in an earth oven, and Poi, a staple made from taro root. However, the experience extends beyond the food. Luau performances include enchanting hula dances and thrilling fire knife dances that weave tales of Hawaiian mythology and history. The rhythmic beats of the pahu drums and the soulful strumming of the ukulele add to the immersive atmosphere. Dressed in traditional Hawaiian attire, you’ll feel a part of this vibrant community, even if just for a night. These festivities offer a genuine taste of Hawaiian hospitality and tradition. Attending a Luau is an unforgettable journey into the spirit and heritage of the Hawaiian Islands, an experience not to be missed.
The name ‘Luau’ actually comes from one of the dishes traditionally served at these feasts, ‘luau,’ a local dish made from chicken and tender leaves of taro cooked in coconut milk.
The term “Luau” didn‘t come into usage until 1856. Before that, such feasts were called ’aha’aina, which translates to “gathering meal”. These gatherings were primarily used to celebrate significant events.
It is traditional to greet each guest at a Luau with a lei – a garland or wreath of flowers, leaves, or shells. This is a symbol of hospitality, love, respect, and the spirit of Aloha.
The Luau feast includes traditional Hawaiian dishes like Kalua pig, which is a whole pig slow-cooked in an earth oven called ‘imu’; Poi, a staple food made from taro root; and Lomi Salmon, a side dish of fresh tomato and salmon salad.
