The Hilo and Hamakua coast is filled with beautiful waterfalls due to the almost daily rain we receive. Your guide will keep you dry as we visit a number of these epic waterfalls including Rainbow Falls near Hilo and a long stop at Akaka Falls State Park where there are numerous waterfalls seen along the paved path. It’s home to one of the tallest falls on the island.
This tour winds its way along small roads from one waterfall to the next gorgeous waterfall. Along the way, we can make stops for you to sample fresh tropical fruit and snacks. Cute farm stands, small shops, and family-run cafes dot the sightseeing routes.

This private tour is perfect for those who want to spend a day sightseeing some of the most beautiful areas around Hilo. The rain may put a little damper on things but it creates some of the most incredible rainforest scenes and plenty of waterfalls.
Your guide starts off the day by picking you up at your accommodation in the Hilo area for a tour of the historic town before heading out to your first waterfall. (Kona guests will have a modified tour route.)
Above Hilo, we will check out the beautiful Rainbow Falls. Stopping here for photos and a walk around the park is a great way to start the day. We will crisscross this same stream going over multiple bridges to view waterfalls as we make our way down to the coast.
Our tour takes us along a winding, bumpy road with little waterfalls and even one with a tunnel. We will enjoy the rainforest beauty, sites, and scents. Your group can even stop at a farm stand or cafe for a late-morning treat.
We continue along the rural road, viewing various sites as your guide provides entertaining stories, points out interesting areas, and fills you in on the local legends. We can head all the way up to the Waipio Valley Overlook and see the waterfalls coming off Kohala Mountain in the distance. Out here we can also stop for a meal on your own. Your guide will have some great recommendations.
On the way back to Hilo, we head up to the 400’ plus Akaka Falls. This park is filled with incredible views, waterfalls, tropical plants, and more. We give you plenty of time to explore. Depending on how much time you have, your guide will take you to see some additional historic gardens and sites in Hilo including a black sand beach.
You can also add on to your tour by choosing to stop at the Tropical Botanical Gardens and/or take a helicopter tour to see more waterfalls and coastal beauty from above. Both are available at checkout for an extra fee.
National Tropical Botanical Garden
This steep garden is filled with waterfalls, exotic & native plants, beautiful overlooks and places to sit and relax. A stop at this garden will change your itinerary for the day including making sure to stop here for a picnic lunch to maximize your time in the garden.
45 Minute Rainforest & Waterfall Helicopter Tour
Guests love to also view waterfalls from above. You will see hundreds of them, as your pilot guides you along the mountainside. The helicopter tour will occur for your group either first thing in the morning or in the evening. Your guide will pick you up and bring you to the heliport as part of the tour.
All meals and food are purchased on your own. Your guide will make a variety of stops based on your group's needs throughout the tour day. Let us know if you have any requests.
