Private Excursion to Iao Valley Features
Immerse Yourself in Hawaiian Culture and Folklore
Iao Valley is famously remembered as the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai (Also known as the "Battle of the Clawed Cliffs") in 1790. Seeking to unite the Hawaiian Islands, Kamehameha landed his war fleet on the shores of North Maui while Maui’s Chief, Kahekili, was away on Oahu. Kahekili’s son, Kalanikupule, along with other Maui chiefs and their armies, entered Iao Valley, intending to use the Iao Needle as a protective hideout. Unknown to them, Kamehameha had brought Western weapons, including cannons, which inflicted heavy casualties during the battle.
Explore the Beautiful Iao Valley
We will lead the way down to ‘Iao Valley, a deep valley made by streams that eroded away rocks formed from a volcanic eruption 320,000 years ago. The walls are covered in lush rainforest and receive an abundance of 386 inches of rainfall pouring into ʻĪao Stream each year – overflowing with tropical flowers and delicious guava fruit as far as your eyes can see.
As we continue our journey along this beautiful river, explore it further with time for swimming or wading in its healing waters before reaching one final destination – the iconic 1,200 foot basalt tower known colloquially as ‘The Needle’!
Cultural Heritage Gardens
Our journey ends at the majestic cultural heritage gardens, showcasing beautiful scale models of traditional homes, totems, and native Hawaiian plants! Here you’ll find a reflection of diverse cultures – from American missionaries to Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Filipino immigrants. These restored gardens have recently been expanded to include taro patches and examples of Hawaiian hale (house) construction. This beautiful park is a stroll through Maui's vibrant immigrant history!
