South Shore Coastal Hike to Sea Cliffs Features
Learn About The History Of The Area
Maha’ulepu (MA·HA ule·PU) is an area rich in natural and local history. Learn about the epic land and sea battle that was fought and won here by the people of Kauaʻi in the 1300s. Your guide will share the story and cultural meaning of the area. Know you’ll be doing your part, as 10% of every Kauaʻi tour will be donated to Makauwahi Cave Reserve and/or Mālama Maha’ulepu.
Choose The Option That’s Right For Your Group
After a day of hiking, nothing feels better than a cooling dip. After the hike, you have the option to snorkel at a beautiful South Shore location. Snorkeling will add about two hours to the tour time. If you choose this option, please pack a lunch.
On Wed, Fri, Sat, and Sun, or by special request, our visit will include a guided tour of the nearby Makauwahi Cave Reserve to see Hawaii’s largest limestone cave and richest fossil site!
Feel the Power of the Ocean
Feel the waves crashing below you, and the compacting of air within the cliffs creates a special surprise. Hiking this beautiful stretch of undeveloped coastline will give you a sense of what ancient Kauaʻi might have felt like long before tourists left their footprints in the sand. It is in this natural setting that we will have a good chance of seeing giant land tortoises that are doing their part to help restore native plants.

Description
This hike is a favorite! Kauai is popular for its natural beauty, and there's no better way to experience it than by hiking to a promontory with stunning views. We'll see Hāʻupu Mountain, Kawelikoa Point, and the Kaua'i Channel from this vantage point. The Kaua'i Channel is particularly striking, as it is very deep, and on clear days, you can even see Oahu 108 miles in the distance. Smelling the salt air and watching the waves crash below is an unforgettable experience.
Maha'ulepu is one of the most special places on Kaua'i. It's not only rich in natural history but cultural history as well. In the 1300s, there was an epic land and sea battle fought here. The people of Kaua'i were victorious, and the area was given the name Maha'ulepu, which literally means "falling together."
As one of the last remaining undeveloped coastline areas on the South Shore, this area is still fiercely protected by locals. On Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, or by special request, we can include a guided tour of a limestone cave and rich fossil site. After the hike, you can choose to snorkel at a beautiful South Shore location. A lovely way to cool off after your hike!
