Each hike offers a unique perspective on this unique natural phenomenon. Begin your tour with a two-mile hike at the 10,000-foot summit where vast cinder cones dominate the expansive desert-like landscape. You will then embark on another two-mile hike at 8,000 feet along a lava trail lined with rare native plant species. Revel in spectacular panoramic views extending for miles in every direction. On a clear day, the expansive views seem to stretch for eternity. Lunch, snacks and an informative guide are included to provide you with one of the greatest experiences on the island of Maui.
Learn About The Fascinating Geology Of Mount Haleakala From Our Expert Guides
Prepare to be amazed by one of East Maui's most extraordinary landmarks. As you embark on a seven-hour hiking adventure, you will be accompanied by one of our experienced local guides who will share with you compelling insights into the world's largest volcano as well as ancient stories and legends unique to the island. Mount Haleakala makes up a staggering 75% of Maui's landmass and has an elevation of 10,023 above sea level. It holds an impressive six of the world's fourteen different climate zones and is home to many endangered species. Absorb the sheer vastness of this natural wonder and appreciate the peaceful silence from above.
Spot Rare And Native Animal And Plant Species
Mount Haleakala is home to some very rare animals and plants found nowhere else on earth. Its extreme and diverse environment means that it has more endangered species than any other US National Park. You may spot the ‘ahinahina, or Haleakala silversword, a threatened plant species only native to Haleakala. You may also encounter the well known Nene, or Hawaiian goose, Hawaii's state bird and considered to be the world's rarest goose. Mount Haleakala is also home to the ‘Ope'ape'a, Hawaiian bat, Hawaii's only endemic land animal. As you wander through this otherworldly landscape, you will be amazed at how much wildlife survives in this barren, moon-like terrain.
