Hawaii Historical Sunset Dinner Cruise Tour Features
Kealakekua Bay
Kealakekua Bay holds a very pivotal place in the history of Hawaii. It is the site of the first contact Hawaiians had with Westerners, specifically with Captain Cook back in 1779. In addition to that Kealakekua Bay is home to a sacred heiau (temple) called Hikiau; this heiau was said to hold a variety of ceremonies and traditional Hawaiian religious practices. Due to its sacredness, the heiau is kapu (forbidden). In addition to the Heiau, is the shore/beach that the bay encompasses. This beach is called Nāpō’opo’o, which is now covered by boulders due to storm surf instead of the sandy beaches you are used to seeing. Overall, Kealakekua Bay is a sight and history to behold.
Captain Cook Monument
The first westerner to make contact with Hawaii was Captain Cook! When Captain Cook arrived, the ship's white sails gave Native Hawaiians the impression he was the god “Lono,” so he was met with respect and reverence. However, Captain Cook was just a human with lighter skin than they have ever seen. Cook was known for his hostility and conqueror mindset towards indigenous peoples, which ultimately led to his death by native Hawaiians. The controversial monument in the Bay is said to mark where he was killed.
