This tour departs from the Lihue Airport and will take guests first around Kauai, then to Niihau for a flyover tour of Hawaii’s ‘Forbidden Island’. Kauai has no shortage of stunning scenery, but you may be surprised to learn that as much as 80% of the island remains inaccessible by vehicle. This makes a guided air tour an absolute must for tourists who want an aerial view of attractions like the Eucalyptus Tunnel of Trees, Captain Cook’s Landing in Waimea Town, Waimea Canyon, and the precipitous sea cliffs of the Na Pali Coastline.
From Kauai, the island of Niihau is only 17 miles away off of the western coast. Niihau is the second smallest island in the Hawaiian island chain, coming in at only 70 square miles. The island was purchased by the Sinclair family in 1864 for ranching purposes, and things have remained almost exactly the same ever since. Niihau is rugged with no paved roads, hospitals, commercial businesses, or other comforts many people would consider necessary. Even so, the island is home to about 200 full time residents who still speak Hawaiian and subsist off of hunting, gathering, and fishing. Return time to the Lihue Airport is expected to be 90 minutes after departure.
