Kohala marks the origin of the Big Island, emerging approximately 1 million years ago from a seafloor hotspot. Though the Kohala volcano’s last eruption occurred around 120,000 years ago, it continues to shape some of the island’s most striking and untamed landscapes.

Known for its rich ranching heritage, deep Hawaiian roots, and stunning valleys, Kohala’s allure extends back to ancient times when migrating Humpback whales established a lasting bond with its coast. Kohala holds the distinction of being the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, the visionary leader who unified the Hawaiian Islands into the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. The site of his birth is commemorated by two sacred birthing stones located near the Moʻokini Heiau, an ancient temple dedicated to the war god Kū.
