Afternoon Whale Watching On The Malolo Features
Mā'alaea
Mā'alaea is a picturesque beach town located near central Maui. It’s known for its stunning views, crystal clear waters, and abundant aquatic life. From snorkeling to whale watching, there are plenty of activities that visitors can enjoy while spending time in Mā'alaea. The town also has great restaurants serving up fresh seafood and other local delicacies. With an endless list of things to do and see, it’s no wonder why Mā'alaea is one of the most popular spots on Maui!
Humpback Whale Migration
Humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawai'i annually for various reasons. Hawai'i’s mild climate and warm water temperatures offer an ideal environment for the whales to rest, socialize, and reproduce. Certain areas within Hawaiian waters serve as critical breeding grounds for humpback whales that they return to each year. Studies have found that humpbacks follow migratory paths adapted over generations by their ancestors; with such ancient instincts guiding them through the open ocean towards Hawai'i, there is no doubt why this destination has become so integral to migrating humpbacks each year.
Humpback Whale Behavior
Humpback whales are one of the most well-known marine mammals, often seen in coastal waters worldwide. These majestic animals display an impressive array of behaviors that help them communicate with each other and their environment. Humpbacks are known for their loud singing, breaching out of water, lobtailing (slapping fins or tail on the surface), spyhopping (rising vertically out of water to look around), and pectoral fin slapping to name a few. They also use body language such as head lunges and chin slaps when interacting. This behavior is fascinating to observe and can give us insight into how these intelligent creatures interact with each other in their natural habitat.
