The horseback adventures featured here depart from CJM Country Stables in the Mahaulepu area on Kauai’s South Shore, beyond Poipu. This coastal ranch setting brings together ocean views, mountain backdrops, and open valley scenery. Use the map to locate the riding area and plan your journey from your accommodation. Although these experiences share a departure location, their timing, duration, and inclusions differ—from sunrise outings and scenic group rides to private paniolo adventures and picnic excursions. The marker shows an approximate location; follow your booking confirmation and the stable’s directions for the final approach and check-in.
Which Kauai horseback ride should I choose?
Choose the two-hour Mahaulepu Ocean, Mountain and Valley Horseback Adventure for a scenic group outing. The three-hour Secret Beach Horseback Ride & Picnic adds a lunch stop and time off the horse. For a more personalized experience, consider the 1.5-hour private ride or two-hour private sunrise adventure. The two-hour Private Paniolo Experience focuses on riding with a Hawaiian cowboy and learning about his ranching background.
Do I need previous horseback riding experience?
Beginners can join the private riding experiences, and the wrangler adjusts the pace to the group’s abilities. Tell the operator about each rider’s experience when booking, including anyone who feels nervous or hasn’t ridden in years. Being a beginner does not remove the physical demands of riding, so review the participation requirements before choosing your tour.
What is different about a private horseback ride?
A private ride includes your own group and wrangler, without additional guests joining you. It offers more flexibility to tailor the outing to your riding experience and arrange photo stops. The standard private experience is listed as 1.5 hours with a minimum of two participants. Sunrise and paniolo experiences are separate private options with their own durations and inclusions.
Can experienced riders trot or canter?
CJM allows the possibility of trotting or cantering on its private excursions, depending on riding ability and the wrangler’s assessment. A private booking does not guarantee a faster ride: the pace must suit the least experienced person in the group. If riding beyond a walk is important to you, discuss your experience and expectations before booking.
Will we ride horses on the beach or into the ocean?
No. CJM states that its rides follow the Mahaulepu coastline but do not include riding or swimming horses on the beach. Expect coastal scenery and ocean views. The Secret Beach picnic experience includes a stop to dismount and enjoy the beach area, rather than a horseback ride through the surf.
What does the Secret Beach picnic ride include?
The excursion lasts approximately three hours. After about an hour of riding, guests dismount for a beach-area break while the guide prepares a picnic of deli sandwiches, chips, and refreshments. The total duration includes this stop, so it is not three continuous hours in the saddle. Discuss dietary needs before booking rather than assuming every request can be accommodated.
How old do children need to be?
The Mahaulepu scenic ride and Secret Beach picnic ride list a minimum age of eight. The private horseback experience, private sunrise ride, and Private Paniolo Experience list a minimum age of six. Age is only one eligibility requirement; each child must also meet the operator’s riding requirements. Helmets are provided, and CJM requires them for riders aged 17 and younger.
Are there weight or physical requirements?
The Hawaii Tours booking forms list a maximum rider weight of 230 pounds and require riders to meet a height-to-weight proportion chart. Weight alone does not determine eligibility. Riders also need sufficient strength, endurance, and balance for the excursion. Check the selected tour’s full requirements and contact the booking team if you’re unsure whether they fit your circumstances.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear closed-toe shoes; long pants are recommended for comfort in the saddle. Bring sunscreen and water, and keep personal items small enough for a saddlebag. CJM does not allow selfie sticks, sundresses, loose flapping material, ponchos, or rain gear on its rides. On private outings, the guide can help take photos at designated stops so you can keep your hands available while riding.
Where do the rides depart, and how early should I arrive?
The rides depart from CJM Country Stables beyond the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. The final approach follows an old sugarcane road, so use the stable’s directions rather than its mailing address. CJM’s scenic ride lists check-in 30 minutes before departure; follow the arrival time on your own booking confirmation. Allow extra time for the final drive, especially for an early sunrise departure.
