Cathedral Dive Lanai Features
The First Cathedral
As you glide through the dark opening of the First Cathedral of Lanai, you enter a vast cavern bathed in otherworldly light filtering through skylights, that illuminate the silhouettes of fish darting around.
Making your way towards the brightly illuminated central altar - a massive lava rock formation fallen from the cavern ceiling - you pause, allowing yourself a moment of tranquility to absorb the breathtaking surroundings. Venturing deeper into the Cathedral, you peer into the "confessionals" - intimate side chambers often inhabited by resting sharks, pufferfish, crabs, and eels.
Emerging from the "shotgun" - a narrow lava shoot at the rear of the cave - you continue your underwater journey through the vibrant coral garden and intricate lava formations, spotting elusive frogfish, colorful reef fish, and sleek eels along the way.
Lanai’s Second Cathedral
The Second Cathedral earns its name not for being second in beauty, but for being the second cavern you encounter when journeying by boat from Maui. Navigating towards the central hall, you are guided by your instructor's torchlight, which unveils a kaleidoscope of colors - vibrant sponges, nudibranchs, and other intriguing small creatures adorning the walls.
Venturing deeper into a side chamber of the cavern, a rare black coral formation hangs like a chandelier from the ceiling above you. Continuing your exploration, you emerge through a lava shoot, accompanied by curious bandit angelfish, before circling the exterior of the cave and re-entering through a shallower opening in the ceiling. This alternate entryway and subsequent exploration of the cavern offer you a fresh perspective on the magnificence of the Second Cathedral.
Fascinating Sealife
From the elegant wrasse to the colorful Butterflyfish and Tang, you'll find yourself surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish numbering in the hundreds. Keep a keen eye out for the elusive moray eels, adding an element of intrigue to your underwater exploration. And don't forget to be on the lookout for Hawaii's iconic state fish, the Reef Triggerfish, known as Humuhumunukanukaapua'a. Despite their shy nature, their vivid, pig-like snouts make them easily recognizable amidst the vibrant marine landscape.
