Your mountain tubing adventure has exclusive access to the historic irrigation system of the former Lihue Plantation. This ditch and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops had been unused since sugar was taken out of production in 2000. The water system runs through some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the island. It includes spectacular views of the mountains and Waialeale Crater. The waters originate near the top of Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots in the world, and are channeled through ditches and tunnels hand-dug by plantation workers over a century ago!

Lihue Plantation

Lihue Plantation was once one of the largest sugar plantations in Hawai’i. Situated on the east coast of the island of Kauai, the plantation covered more than 20,000 acres of land. Today, the plantation is no longer in operation, but its history is still very much alive. The former plantation grounds are now home to a museum as well as a working farm and botanical garden. Visitors can tour the plantation grounds and learn about the role that sugar played in Hawaiian history. They can also see firsthand how sugar was produced, from crushing the cane to boiling the syrup. The Lihue Plantation is a fascinating glimpse into Hawaii's past, and a must-see for anyone interested in Hawaiian history or sugar production.

Description

After checking in at our base camp, we load up on our four-wheel drive off-road vehicles for a tour through Lihue Plantation lands. Feel the road and enjoy this ride over historic land. Our exclusive access to this facility gives you a rare glimpse of a century’s old industry that help to shape the Hawaii of today. This is a wonderful chance to learn about the history of this beautiful island.

Once on foot, and guided by our highly knowledgeable local staff, you’ll be shown the history of the rainforest you’re walking through and learn of the foliage and animals who call it home.

We continue our journey toward the Lihue plantation’s 100-year-old irrigation system where our water tubes await us. Once there, we’ll begin our journey down the waterway through five darkened tunnels and beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Float gently down 2.5 miles of calming waterways and let yourself truly relax and take in the sights and sounds.
Our tour concludes with lunch and an optional swim at a pristine jungle waterhole where you can continue to enjoy should you choose to.

Check in 30 minutes before your departure time
30 minutes: Four-wheel drive tour through Lihue Plantation lands
1 hour: Tour through the forest listening to the narration of the surrounding area by your tour guide
1.5 hours: Tube down Lihue plantation century-old irrigation system through 5 tunnels and beautiful views of the surrounding rainforest
Finish back at base camp for the conclusion of our tour where lunch and a private swim in a pristine swimming hole will be made available

How Far In Advance Should I Book This Tour?

This is the only activity like this in all of Hawaii so itʻs pretty popular. During the busy season like summer and Christmas, you need to book at least 3 months in advance if you have a group. There is limited availability.
Do you have life jackets available to rent for children?

Lifejackets are included for all ages on this tour. As long as you meet the minimum and are not over the maximum in terms of weight, we have a life jacket that will fit you. Please be sure to wear water shoes, hiking sandals, or croc-type footwear as your feet will come in contact with canal walls and rocks.
Is This A Good Family Friendly Activity?

Definitely! This is open to ages 5 and up. Itʻs a gentle ride down smooth flowing canals. The tunnels are fun and the kids enjoy the excitement going through them with just the headlamp.
Will We Be Going Down Dangerous Rapids?

No this is more of a relaxing, gentle coasting down a lazy river type of activity.

How Advanced Of A Swimmer Do I Have To Be For This Tour?

Not very advanced at all, the water is shallow (about 3 feet) and the current pulls us gently down the stream, think "lazy river".
Is It Ok To Bring A Camera?

Yes you can bring your camera but photo packages are also available for modest fee.
If we bring dry clothes and towel will our belongings be at the end of the tubing experience?

At check-in, you will have a number of options related to what you want and should bring along on your tubing adventure. You will have an opportunity to change, dry off, change shoes, and more.
Does this experience happen, rain or shine?

Yes, this experience occurs daily. Itʻs always raining on Kauai at some location but the route is long and controlled so we donʻt have to worry too much. Much of the ride is thru areas that you wonʻt even feel the rain due to forest cover and caves. The lunch top includes covered seating.
What temperature is the water in March?

On average the water temperature is a balmy 75F (24C). It will rise to about 85F by September. March is when the water tends to be the coldest.
Do you have tubes with a bottom for younger kids?

There are a variety of tube sizes for the younger kids but they do not have nets at the bottom. They will be required to sit in them with their legs over the side, the same as adults.
Can pregnant women do the tubing tour?

Yes, pregnant women can participate in this activity. If your doctor has cleared you to fly to Hawaii then you are ok to participate. Please be aware you will be in cold water and will make 1-2 small drops in the tube on the tour.
Are the tunnels tiny? Could you feel claustrophobic in the tunnel?

The tunnels are not tiny, and you will have plenty of space around you. Your feet may touch the sides, but you can not touch the ceiling while sitting in the tube. The tunnels become completely dark for short periods. The guides will be nearby and will always have lights where needed.
Are lockers available to store personal items?

There are small lockers available at check-in to leave important items that will be stored securely until you return to check them out.
