The Olowalu Valley
Olowalu Valley, like many of Hawaii’s cherished natural landmarks, holds a rich and intriguing history that continues to unfold. Famous for its vibrant reef and ancient petroglyphs, Olowalu is also believed to have been a place of refuge, offering sanctuary to those in need. This storied past adds depth and meaning to its already stunning natural beauty.
Learn From A Cultural Practitioner
The day begins with Ua Aloha Maji, the team’s cultural practitioner, blowing his conch and leading an oli (chant) to honor the land. This sacred moment sets the tone as the group shows respect for the site before beginning the day’s work. Tasks may include clearing invasive species or working in the loʻi (taro patches), but each day offers a chance to learn about traditional Hawaiian farming techniques. Volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the water cycle, enhancing their appreciation for the land and its cultural significance.
