Founded in 1976 by Rene Sylva, Maui Nui Botanical Garden is situated within a coastal dune system and is dedicated to conserving native Hawaiian plants, particularly those from the dry forest and coastal areas of Maui Nui, which includes Maui, Molokaʻi, Lanaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe. The gardens also feature an impressive collection of Polynesian-introduced plants, offering a comprehensive look at the native flora.

The mission is to cultivate an appreciation and understanding of the plants of Maui Nui and their significance in Hawaiian cultural expression. Maui Nui Botanical Gardens provides people with a gathering place to explore and understand the vital relationship these plants have with our economic, social, and cultural livelihoods.
Local Cultural Practitioners
As MNBG reaches out to groups outside of the Gardens, we also draw people in through interpretation of our living collection (native and Polynesian-introduced plantings in the Gardens) and the hiring of local cultural practitioners to demonstrate and teach their crafts to visitors of the Gardens. Your alaka‘i kuhi (resident docent) will demonstrate traditional uses of indigenous plants and “talk story” during this tour.

During your visit to Maui Nui Botanical Garden, you'll have the unique opportunity to take a private, guided tour led by expert guides who work closely with the island's endemic plants on a daily basis. Depending on the season, you'll also get to participate in a hands-on activity, such as crafting a lei or weaving a bracelet from the plants you encounter along the way.
