Entry fees into Haleakala National Park are included as part of the tour, and upon arriving at the summit you will be able to stretch your legs and explore the magical landscape found nowhere else in the world. Dozens of unique species of plants and wildlife inhabit the crater and surrounding area, including the Silversword plant and Hawaii’s state bird, the Nene goose. After loading back into the minibus, guests will be taken on a tour of Upcountry (Kula, Makawao, Haiku) and the North Shore (Paia). Return time to your original pick up location is expected to be between 3:00pm – 4:00pm.

Haleakala is impossible to miss as it towers over the island and is visible from just about any point. The summit sits at over 10,000 ft. and is the remnant of a volcano that collapsed in on itself thousands of years ago. Have no fear of a sudden eruption, as Haleakala has since gone dormant, and will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future. The last time there was any sort of lava flow on Maui was in 1790, and it didn’t come from the crater but rather a region on the southwest side of the mountain near what is now LaPerouse Bay. The distinctive scenery atop Haleakala and the otherworldly feel of the interior of the crater is not something you will soon forget.
No tour of Upcountry Maui would be complete without visiting Kula, which is the closest town to Haleakala at 3,000 ft. in elevation. Kula means “open country” and definitely lives up to the name with sprawling grassy fields filled with cows and goats. This region has a rich history rooted in agriculture and ranching. Kula is heavily favored by permanent Maui residents as it is known for being more quiet with outstanding views and cooler temperatures.
A landmark of Maui’s North Shore is Paia, which is only 4 miles from Kahului. What was once a booming plantation town during the height of the sugar cane industry on Maui has now become a distinctly bohemian surf destination filled with charming boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops and delicious restaurants. Ho’okipa, a popular surf spot located past Paia on Hana highway is known as the windsurfing capital of the world, and upon seeing the plethora of sails and kites that these surfers use to propel themselves across the water’s surface you will see why.
As part of this tour, you will be able to peel back the layers of ancient Hawaiian history, as well as the remarkable voyaging skills of the early Polynesians which spread their people and culture throughout the Pacific. Learn about cornerstone events in Hawaii’s history from the first arrivals to the islands all the way to the Kamehameha dynasty which united the various factions that inhabited the Hawaiian islands in the early 19th century.
