Riding in a smaller vessel means that guests will have the opportunity to get much closer to the whales than they would be able to in a larger tour boat. This tour focuses on finding the Humpback whales in their natural habitat and observing what they are doing from a safe and non-intrusive distance. An underwater hydrophone will be used to give guests a chance to listen to the whales sing, click, and communicate with each other.
While this tour does not involve getting out of the boat to swim, whales are mammals, and spend a lot of time close to the surface to breathe and play. Humpback whales migrate down from Alaska to mate and give birth to their babies, so on this tour you may be able to see males competing for a female’s attention, hear the haunting songs they sing to each other, and if you are lucky, a baby Humpback whale that has just been born. Humpback whales are not the only species of whale to call the Kona coast home this time of year, and guests may also see Pilot Whales, Beaked Whales and Melon-headed Whales.
This tour is a perfect opportunity for whale lovers and ocean enthusiasts to have an intimate, safe and unforgettable encounter with some of the most remarkable creatures in our ocean. Check in time at the Keauhou Bay boat launch ramp is at 12:15pm with a return time of 3:00pm.

The main focus of this tour is finding Humpback whales in their natural habitat and respectfully observing these gigantic marine mammals. Watch whales do a variety of things like blowing water up into the air through their blowhole, slapping the surface of the water with their fins, breaching, and diving. Seeing these Humpback whales from the beach is one thing, but being on the open water with them is an experience that you will never forget.
Because it is shielded from winds by Maunaloa, Kona’s clear and glassy coastal waters offer the perfect environment for viewing sea life. From the boat, guests will be able to look back and see the Kona landscape, cliffs, and the slopes of Maunaloa from a totally different perspective.
Humpback whales are one of many different species that call Hawaii home. On this tour be sure to keep your eyes open, as you may be able to catch a glimpse of turtles and dolphins in the clear waters. Guests may also be able to see some more unusual types of whales, including Pilot Whales, Beaked Whales and Melon-headed Whales.
