Mālama the Āina Experience at Gunstock Ranch Features
Plant a Tree in the Mālama the Forest
When you plant a tree in the Legacy Forest, you create a ripple of positive change while engaging in a unique cultural experience.
During your eco-tour and tree-planting activity, our guides will share the history of the Hawai’ian land and explain how your tree will aid in healing the local ecosystem. You’ll encounter wildlife, see grazing cattle, and enjoy ocean views, culminating in a memorable ceremony where you personally plant your tree. You can purchase additional trees for $125 each.
Ride to the Lookout
Accompanied by a friendly guide, you’ll journey through lush pastures and mountain trails, taking in the stunning scenery of O’ahu’s North Shore, including its crystal-clear waters, offshore islands, and pristine sandy beaches. You'll also enjoy an exclusive glimpse of the Hidden Cave, which was featured on “Hawai’i 5-0.”
As you ride to the summit of our lookout point, you’ll feel a sense of pride, just like a true paniolo (Hawai’ian cowboy).
Learn about the Āina
This activity offers an intimate experience of Hawai’i’s unique beauty. You'll learn about the significance of Mālama —caring for our island, its plants, and animals—while contributing to our extensive reforestation efforts on the North Shore. This includes removing invasive species, harvesting our own honey, and creating open spaces for over 100 cattle and more than 150 horses to thrive. Description
Step into Hawai’ian history, do your part for the forest and get your hands dirty. With three different activities to help you learn about the unique ecology of the islands while you enjoy time in the beautiful scenery of Gunstock Ranch. You will spend time in the forest to gain an understanding of the local plant life, the effort to restore native species, and the devastating effects of invasive species.
Go on a peaceful horseback ride to enjoy the views of pastures, forests, mountains, and the serenity of the Pacific Ocean. And you’ll take part in the restoration initiative by planting a tree during a special ceremony. One tree per two people is included in the cost of the tour and you’ll receive a special e-certificate. If you wish, you may purchase additional trees. The fee goes to the non-profit Hawai’ian Legacy Reforestation Initiative. This is truly a unique way to spend a day, and you’ll forever remember helping to Mālama the Āina.

Food & Drink
You can choose to purchase a picnic lunch for $16 per person. This meal includes cold-cut sandwiches on a brioche bun, fresh fruit, a small bag of chips, bottles water, canned juice, cookies, and a mint.
Instructions
- Located on the North Shore of O’ahu at 56-250 Kamehameha Hwy, Kahuku, HI 96731. Gunstock Ranch is two miles north of the Polynesian Cultural Center.
- Check-in is 45 minutes before the tour starts. There is a required 15-minute safety briefing for the experience.
- Backpacks, bags, and bulky camera equipment will not be allowed on the horses for the ride. We have a small pack on the saddle that will fit a water bottle or small camera.
Cancellation
Your purchase is 100% refundable, provided you cancel your reservation at least 24 hours (for group charters) or 72 hours (for private charters) prior to its check-in time. The company reserves the right to cancel or reschedule tours at any time due to weather or capacity.
