Everyone who visits Hawaii becomes fascinated with the ocean. One of the best ways to experience it is with a surf or stand up paddle board lesson. As one of the island's first surf schools, this locally owned Maui company has been teaching the art of Hawaiian-style surfing for decades. Their fun and friendly instructors will get you acquainted with the equipment on land before getting you into the water at safe and uncrowded locations along Maui’s south and west shores. They guarantee you’ll be up paddling and surfing on your very first lesson!
This is the only surf school that provides refreshments and snacks, and the instructors enjoy celebrating special occasions. The owner and instructors take pride in providing excellent customer service. Their goal is for guests to have a safe, comfortable, and relaxing time in the water.
A SUP (stand-up paddle board) lesson is the best way to learn this ancient Hawaiian sport, and the crew will get you up and paddle boarding in no time! These 1.5 hour lessons consist primarily of time in the water but you will start on dry land to get your balance and a feel for the paddle. While in the water, instructors help you “read” waves and currents, while giving you feedback about paddling techniques, feet placement, and stance. It’s fun for the whole family as these entertaining instructors are long time surfers who have traveled the world surfing, often since they were young kids. Much care and patience is taken with beginners to ensure that the guests' enjoyment of the sport will last for years to come, maybe even a lifetime! All the necessary gear is provided, so all you have to do is show up and have fun!
While surfing and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) stem from a shared Hawaiian heritage and require balance and wave knowledge, they exhibit fundamental differences. Surfing primarily involves waiting for a wave and then riding it towards the shore either standing or lying on the board. On the other hand, SUP involves standing upright on the board and using a paddle for propulsion, giving the user more freedom to explore tranquil waters and not just surf zones. Additionally, the larger, more buoyant design of a SUP board typically offers more stability than a surfboard, making it more accessible to beginners or those seeking a less intense, yet equally gratifying, water sports experience.
Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), although popularized globally in recent years, has its roots firmly planted in the sandy beaches of Hawai'i. The ancient Hawaiians were known for their profound connection to the sea, using boards, canoes, and other vehicles to navigate their island waters. The modern iteration of SUP, as we know it today, surfaced in the 1960s when the Waikīkī beach boys, a group of celebrated surf instructors and beach lifeguards, began standing on their longboards while using outrigger paddles to navigate through the surf and keep an eye on their large groups of students. This practice quickly gained popularity and evolved into the sport of stand-up paddle boarding.
