These are caused by the torrential rainfalls, mist, and condensation in this incredibly wet coastal area that gets about forty feet of rain every year.
The deep chasm of Waimea Canyon stretches for 10 miles from the interior of the island to the sea. At around 3,500 ft deep, the canyon has numerous waterfalls and micro climates that are nearly impossible to see except from the air. The red layers of earth mix with the tropical forests, all of it sculpted from the dormant shield volcano that created the island some 5 million years ago.
Over 70% of Kauai is inaccessible by land, meaning it is best seen from the air. You’ll see Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as “Jurassic Park” falls, cascading high in a wedge between the mountaintops of Hanapepe Valley. We’ll also fly along Kauai’s stunning north shore, home to the turquoise waters of Hanalei Bay and the resort areas of Princeville.
