We are the only Native Hawaiian Surf School with professional Hawaiian lifeguards and watermen serving Kailua-Kona since 1998. You will be a part of an exclusive private group of 3-6 surfers with 2-3 private lifeguards at Kahalu’u Beach Park. Our Hawaii lifeguard Surf Instructors are Trained and Certified by the American Red Cross. Classes start with a 10 minute classroom surf school instruction then up to 2 hours surf school water time at Kahalu’u Bay (return surfers bypass classroom time).
Once we get on our boards, we will teach you the best techniques for paddling, standing, and riding the waves. An instructor will be with you every step of the way. If you need more assistance or a little “push,” we’ve got you.
We are family owned and operated and have hand-picked the best instructors in the Kona area, so you can be confident that you’re in good hands. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, we’ll make sure that you have a great time. If you have friends or family members who won’t be taking lessons, an ideal surf viewing area is available at Kahalu’u Beach Park for spectators to enjoy. In ancient Hawaii, surfing was more than just a hobby – it was a way of life. The Hawaiian people referred to surfing as heʻe nalu, or “wave sliding,” and it was an important part of their culture. Before entering the ocean, surfers would pray to the gods for protection and strength. If the waves were calm, they would call upon the kahuna (priest), who would say a prayer asking for great surfing conditions. Surfing may have been popularized by Beach Boys songs and Hollywood movies, but its roots go much deeper. The next time you hit the waves, take a moment to appreciate the history and culture that surfing has to offer.
