Legend has it that ʻAkaka Falls derived its name from Chief 'Akaka, known to have an affectionate and loyal wife. The chief built a home for them nestled within the lush forest, yet succumbed to temptation, engaging in extramarital affairs with Maile and Lehua. When his faithful wife discovered his infidelity, 'Akaka fled in disgrace, accompanied only by his dog. In his haste, he met a tragic end, tumbling over the falls to his demise.
As the legend goes, his steadfast dog stayed atop the waterfall, awaiting his master's return with unwavering loyalty. So enduring was his vigil that folklore suggests he transformed into the stone that now crowns the falls, a poignant testament to loyalty and devotion amidst the cascading waters.
