Kona Cloud Forest & Ouer Garden with Picnic Lunch
Tour A Special Forest & Garden In Kona
East and West (Hilo and Kona) (Windward and Leeward) sides of the Big Island are like two different islands. So for those wishing to see more of Hawaii Island, a trip to this side also includes a drive through the central “saddle” of the island with sweeping views of the volcanoes and a feel for the expanse of this unique and biggest island of the Hawaiian Archipelago.

Overlook Stops Along The Route
Start your day with pickup at the hotel and a drive through historic Hilo on your way up the mountain. Depending on the timing we will make a variety of overlook stops as we make our way across the “saddle” between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, leaving the Hilo side of Big Island for the upper reaches on the Kona side.
After about 1.5 hours we enter the Kona side of the island, a much different landscape than Hilo, in fact, almost the opposite. This area gets a lot less rain and relies heavily on the cloud forest for moisture. We visit Bezona Cloud forest on our first stop. This privately owned 70-acre forest is full of incredible palm trees, ohia and bamboo too. The songs of the birds among this beauty should not be missed. We spend about 3 hours at this location with a 1.5 to 2.5 mile walk.
The group then heads over to Ouer Garden for a picnic lunch. This 3-acre forest property has been curated by long-time member David Ouer. Over the past 14 years, he has been enhancing this land which you will enjoy for the afternoon.
We head back over the saddle, aweing in the beauty of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa before descending back down into Hilo and returning you to your hotel.

“Mana Mauka” (the Ouer Garden) is located at a cooler elevation near the northern end of the Kona Coffee Belt – on the lower slopes of the Kona Coast of West Hawaii Island. This elevation on the “dry” side of the island is often graced with afternoon showers and allows for an extensive natural forest.
Long time IPS Member (and 15 year IPS PalmTalk Forum Admin/Moderator) Dean Ouer has worked on enhancing the 3 acre forested property with palms, aroids, and other tropical fauna for 14 years.
This learning cloud forest is open to a select number of visitors, educators and students. Situated on the Kona side of Big Island of Hawaii, you will enjoy a 1.5 to 2.5 mile guided walk through the forest.
