Maui is the second-largest island of the main Hawaiian islands and is quite a bit bigger than most visitors think. While the road to the summit of Haleakala is only 38 miles long, the road is a steep ascent of switchbacks that can take over 1.5 hours to drive. Likewise, the road to Hana is over 60 miles to the Pools of ʻOheʻo. Even the best-planned day can, in reality, be 10-12 hours long, so be sure to plan your vacation time accordingly.
