Maui is the second largest island of the main Hawaiian islands and is quite a bit bigger than most visitors think. While the road to the summit of Haleakala is only 38 miles long, the road is a steep ascent of switchbacks that can take over an hour to drive. Likewise, the road to Hana is over 60 miles to the Pools of ʻOheʻo, located eight miles beyond the town of Hana. Even the best-planned day can, in reality, be 10-12 hours long, so be sure to plan your vacation time accordingly.
